Casper Sleep Inc., a New York Startup that delivers its memory foam and latex mattresses in a box, recently raised $55 million in a round of Series B venture funding.

Like Seamless for mattresses, appealing to the desire for instant gratification and ease, Casper was wildly successful in its first month, earning $1 million in sales, with a current run rate of $100 million after 14 months of operation. Institutional Venture Partners, Pritzker Group Venture Capital, and numerous celebrities including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey McGuire, Scooter Braun, and Adam Levine backed the most recent investment.

In their Series A round, Casper brought in $13.1 million from investors including New Enterprise Associates, Lerer Hippeau Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners, Vaizra Investments, SV Angel, Slow Ventures and Nas’ Queensbridge Ventures. The 14-month-young company is now valued at $550 million and is backed by celebrities, a strategy designed to expand their business and their popularity.

The Mattress

Founder & CEO Philip Krim brought the company to success by delivering their mattresses to New York City residents within hours of placing their order via Uber & bicycles. Originally designed by former IDEO inventors, a design and consulting firm out of Palo Alto, California, the concept is simple.

The mattress comes right out of the box ready to use, backed by a 100 night free in-home trial and a 10 year warranty, with free shipping and returns. But the ease of ordering and returning isn’t their main selling point, the quality of the mattress itself is.

The company advertises that their mattress is made for everyone, from 40 to 400 pounds, and the responsive materials contour to every body shape and sleeping position making it a perfect fit for all. The latex keeps the mattress cool and maintains its bounce, while the memory foam contours to the body with minimal shrinkage.

The reviews posted on their website seem to support this, with a wide array of customers rating their mattress with 5 stars, with an overall rating of 4.68 stars to date.

Mattresses can be tested out before being purchased at their showrooms in New York City and Los Angeles, with prices starting at $500 for a twin and going up to $950 for a King. But if you can’t make it to the showrooms, the risk free trial and free return make it a worthy contender if you’re in the market for a new mattress.

Plans for Expansion and Growth

The next step, Krim states, is to make the company the best in everything when it comes to sleep; adding that soon Casper will sell pillows and sheets as well. An endearing ad that pops up on the website with a yawning dog stating that something new is coming, sign up to be the first to know, demonstrates the rate at which they will be expanding not only their production, but their offerings as well.

Just last week, the company announced that they will begin operating their same day delivery feature in San Francisco. The new Series B funding will be used to expand and strengthen their production to reach customers outside of New York, grow their staff beyond the current 75 employees, invest further in development and plan for their international expansion into Europe.
